Starting Pethau Cymraeg has been more than just creating a business for me—it’s a way to preserve, celebrate, and pass on something that has shaped my entire life. Born and raised on a farm, I have always identified strongly with my Welsh roots. Growing up as a Welsh farmer’s daughter—well, as we say, that’s about as Welsh as you can get. It wasn’t just about living in Wales; it was about living through the Welsh language, culture, and traditions that surrounded me every single day.

Welsh was the language I heard at home, spoken fluently by Dad, and determinedly learned by Mam so that my siblings and I could grow up fully immersed in it. It was a part of my life that was woven into everything we did. While English was present, Welsh was the language that felt most natural, most close to home. It shaped my thoughts, my expressions, and my way of seeing the world. For me, this language is more than just words—it’s a living part of my history and identity.

The Heart of Welsh Culture

Welsh culture, as many know, is rich with folklore, stories, and traditions that stretch back generations. From the old tales of the Mabinogion to the sayings passed down from grandparents, our heritage is deeply embedded in the way we live and see the world.

“Cenedl heb iaith, cenedl heb galon”—a nation without a language is a nation without a heart.

Another story that resonates deeply with me is the tale of Gelert, the loyal dog of Prince Llywelyn. The loyalty, tragedy, and the lessons it carries about trust and assumptions are things we still reflect on today. These stories, the ones we heard growing up, are the threads that hold us together as a community. They tie us to our land, our history, and to one another. Through my business, I aim to create products that feel fresh and current while still being deeply rooted in the Welsh language and culture. Starting with greeting cards, invitations, and stationery, I want to offer high-quality, beautifully crafted items that anyone can use to express their love for our language. There are so many talented artists across Wales, and I see an opportunity to showcase their incredible work, too. I believe in supporting local talent and ensuring that their contributions to our culture are recognised and appreciated.

Leaving a Legacy

One of the most important motivations behind starting Pethau Cymraeg is the desire to leave something behind. Not just for myself, my family, and my friends—but for my children and future generations. I want them to grow up feeling the same connection to their Welsh heritage that I do. I want them to know that no matter how much the world changes, their language and culture are something to be proud of, something worth carrying forward.

In Welsh, we often say, “Nid yw’r hyn sydd o bwys yn marw byth”—what is important never dies. For me, that applies to our language, our culture, and the values that come with them. Through this business, I hope to create something that future generations can continue, adapting and evolving with the times but always keeping the heart of Welsh identity alive. My children, and perhaps one day my grandchildren, will hopefully look at Pethau Cymraeg as not just a business but as a legacy—a way of honouring the past while embracing the future.
